The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) is calling on the next government to prioritize the support and development of renewable energy sources in the UK.

This urgent plea comes as the country is expected to experience a decline in North Sea oil and gas production, which will result in a greater reliance on energy imports.
By transitioning to renewable energy and other clean technologies, the UK can reduce its dependence on energy imports and maintain energy self-sufficiency. This shift towards renewables will not only help to secure the country's energy supply but also enhance energy security by 2030.
Renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power offer a sustainable and environment-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. Investing in these technologies will not only reduce the UK's carbon emissions but also create new job opportunities and stimulate economic growth.
Furthermore, supporting renewable energy will help to diversify the country's energy mix, reducing the risks associated with relying heavily on a single energy source. This diversification will make the UK more resilient to fluctuations in global energy markets and geopolitical tensions.
Commenting on the findings, Dr Simon Cran-McGreehin, head of analysis at the ECIU, said:
“The UK could be in reverse gear on energy security over the next five years. If you want more of the UK’s energy made in the UK, and as the North Sea continues its inevitable decline, British wind and solar energy make the biggest difference, doing the heavy lifting on British energy security.”
“According to the regulator’s own figures, new North Sea oil and gas would make a marginal difference. Switching to renewables, electric heat pumps and insulating homes so they waste less energy will move us away from gas. Anyone who has paid an energy bill in the past two years knows the risks of being dependent on international gas markets, which largely dictate the price we pay here in the UK, and energy bills are set to rise again as we head into the winter.” (Source: Current News UK)
The ECIU emphasizes that the transition to renewables must be a priority for the next government. It is crucial to invest in the necessary infrastructure, research, and development to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy technologies. This will ensure that the UK can meet its energy needs sustainably and reduce its carbon footprint.
By embracing renewable energy and clean technologies, the UK can not only mitigate the risks associated with declining North Sea oil and gas production but also position itself as a global leader in the transition to a low-carbon economy. This will not only benefit the environment but also create a more secure and sustainable energy future for the country.
