Born on September 27, 1976, in Tampa, Florida, Alen Kozić emerged as a promising soccer talent at a young age. He was raised in a family deeply ingrained in the soccer world, with his father, Refik Kozić, being a professional soccer player. Alen’s journey in the realm of soccer began within the youth soccer organization in Tampa, where he exhibited exceptional skills and
a natural flair for the game.
Kozic’s Schooling
Kozić’s prowess on the field extended to his high school years at Berkeley Preparatory School. Over a three-year stint, he led his school’s soccer team to an impressive trio of state championships in 1993, 1994, and 1995. This stellar performance didn’t go unnoticed, earning him the title of high school All-American. Additionally, he was honored as the Tampa Bay Times player of the decade for the 90s in Hillsborough County.
Club Soccer
Alen Kozic played club soccer for Temple Terrace Spirit. Playing up a year during his whole youth career, he helped guide the team which won state cup for the ages U13, U15,U16, U17, U18 & U19. In 1995 the team ending up winning the National Championship. His efforts in leading Temple Terrace got noticed quickly.
The talented young player was also a part of the U17 Southeast USA regional team. His dedication and talent were further recognized when he was invited to a USA national team camp in 1996, a testament to his potential as a soccer professional.
College & Career
Moving on to the collegiate level, Kozić made a mark while playing for Florida International University from 1995 to 1997. As a sophomore, he played a pivotal role in FIU’s journey to the College Cup final, showcasing his exceptional talent. Kozić’s contributions earned him a place in the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer All-American First Team during his sophomore and junior years. Later on, he signed his first professional contract with SV Austria Salzburg (now Red Bull Salzburg) in the Austrian Bundesliga at the age of 20. Subsequently, he returned home to join Major League Soccer (MLS) with Miami Fusion from 1998 to 2000. In 2000, Kozic terminated his MLS contract which had two years left to try his luck in Europe, Signing with NK Istra in the Croatian First Division. After a successful spell 6 month spell, Fortuna Dusseldorf of Germany opted to purchase him where he spent the next 4 years in Germany. He was sent out on loan during that time playing for FC Union. In 2004, he decided to return to the MLS with a trial at DC United that was unsuccessful.
The Unfortunate Retirement
Unfortunately, injuries took a toll on Kozic’s time throughout his career with multiple knee injuries with the first major ACL injury coming during the first season with Miami Fusion. Knee injuries would follow him throughout the rest of career until his retirement in 2004.
