India's automotive stamping industry has seen tremendous growth over the past decade to emerge as a key player globally.
With rising incomes and ability to purchase vehicles, the demand for cars and commercial vehicles has grown manifold in India. The passenger vehicle sector in particular has witnessed double digit growth rates consistently. Increased vehicle production has led to a surge in demand for stamped auto components from manufacturers.
The automobile production in India reached a record 33.77 million units in FY19-20. Industry experts project this number to reach 50 million units by 2026. This surging production presents a massive opportunity for auto component suppliers including those in stamping.
Establishment of Global Manufacturing Hubs
Several global automakers have chosen India as an export hub to service international s. Companies like Hyundai, Renault-Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen etc. have set up large scale manufacturing plants in India for domestic sales as well as exports. This has encouraged suppliers of stamped parts to also establish manufacturing units within India.
Leading automotive stampers like Orchid Tool Engineering, Caparo and Pankaj Steel have commissioned multi-million dollar production facilities dedicated for global OEMs. Localization helps component makers cater to client requirements efficiently while gaining export orders.
Policy Push
The India Automotive Stamping sector as a key employment generator. Favorable policies like Production Linked Incentive Scheme, phased manufacturing programs and relaxed FDI norms have incentivized investments in this industry.
Relaxations have enabled automakers to locally source over 90% of components including stamped metal parts. Auto component makers are diversifying into high-tech stamped parts to upgrade technology and capabilities. Governments push towards electric mobility will further spur investment in advanced stamping equipment.
Technological Advancements
The Indian automotive stamping industry is moving towards indigenization of advanced stamping technologies like hot stamping, super plastic forming, hydroforming etc. Large players are partnering global technology majors for know-how transfer.
Manufacturers are augmenting stamping lines with Industry 4.0 solutions for process digitalization, predictive maintenance and higher productivity. Adoption of robotics and Cobots is streamlining material handling. Investments in R&D has enabled local firms to develop complex high-strength steel body panels conforming to global quality standards.
Growth of Exports
As capacities scale up to fulfill rising domestic demand, Indian stamping companies are tapping strong export opportunities. Favorable geographic location and cost competitiveness has supported exports of stamped parts to North America, Europe, ASEAN and Middle East regions.
According to industry estimates, automotive exports from India are projected to exceed USD 18 billion by 2026 of which stampings with form a major chunk. Preferential trade agreements like India-EU FTA and partnerships with Latin American countries will further facilitate outbound shipments.
