Meena Alexander was born on February 17, 1951, in Allahabad, India, to George Alexander, a scientist, and Mary Alexander, a homemaker. When she was five years old, her family moved to Khartoum, Sudan, where her father had a teaching position. Growing up in Sudan, Alexander was exposed to a variety of languages and cultures, which greatly influenced her literary sensibilities. She learned English, Arabic, Malayalam, and Hindi, which would later reflect in her multilingual literary work.
