In the catheter operating room of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, an operation is in progress. Among the people involved in the operation, there was a distinctly foreign face.
Xi An, an international student from Bangladesh, has already undergone many surgeries under the guidance of his teachers, even though he is only a graduate student at Guangxi Medical University.
At the end of 2011, I came to China. I was 19 years old and didn’t speak Chinese. “Since Xi An first came to China, he has been studying at Guangxi Medical University for 8 years.
After graduating from high school, his parents wanted him to study abroad at a medical university and become an international doctor. Because in Bangladesh, doctors are a very respected profession.
Through his parents’ friends, Xi learned that Guangxi Medical University is a very good school, and the weather in Nanning is similar to that of Bangladesh. So, Xi An made a decision.
Through a series of exams and applications, Xi An successfully obtained an admission letter from Guangxi Medical University. However, for Xi An, who has been immersed in studying for more than ten years of his life, the road to study in a foreign country is more difficult than imagined.
For Xi, language is the biggest obstacle to living and studying in China. Despite attending an English-only class at Guangxi Medical University, Xi found that he still couldn’t fully understand the content of his coursework. Because the teachers are Chinese, and the students come from many non-native English speaking countries, the accents are very different, so the communication in the class is not smooth.
“It’s really very difficult, I don’t understand what the teachers do, I don’t understand what the teachers teach,” Xi said.
In order to keep up with the pace of study, Xi An had no choice but to keep improving his Chinese proficiency and at the same time seize all the time to study and make up for the shortcomings in the classroom. Xi An actively participates in a variety of activities inside and outside the classroom to improve his language skills and consolidate knowledge in communicating with people and the outside world.
In this way, Xi An survived the most difficult years, he won the honor of outstanding international student many times, and also joined the student union of the School of International Exchange to help international students who have just arrived in a foreign country to solve problems in life and study.
By this time, Xi An had fully adapted to living and studying in Nanning.
In 2017, Xi completed his undergraduate studies and immediately began to consider pursuing graduate studies. There are two difficult problems in front of him, the Chinese proficiency test and the choice of major.
Despite being in China for many years, Xi’an’s Chinese is only enough to meet the level of daily communication. However, in order to pursue postgraduate studies, he needs to pass the HSK 5 test. In order to achieve this goal, Xi An spent half a year after graduating from his undergraduate degree, concentrating on learning Chinese.
In terms of choice of major, Xi An oscillates between gastroenterology and cardiovascular medicine. Although Xi prefers cardiovascular medicine, it is a more difficult subject in its own right, not to mention having to learn it in a non-native environment.
Xi’an’s love for cardiovascular medicine stems from a 2016 contest he participated in, the Cardiovascular Physician Speech Competition, which included all medical students from China and abroad. In order to get good grades, Xi An spent a lot of time, looking up cases, and carefully studying cardiovascular-related books, which was the first time he had put so much effort into a particular subject.
In the end, Xi An stood out and won the second place. And this also inspired him to choose a cardiovascular major.
“You choose the easy things, and life will be more difficult; You choose the difficult things and life will be easier. Although there were some hesitations and hesitations, after discussing with his family and teachers, Xi An finally chose to challenge a more difficult life, just as he came to China to study alone.
After becoming a graduate student majoring in cardiovascular medicine, Xi An would report to the operating room almost every day, observe as many as possible or participate in the operation as an assistant, and sometimes complete some surgical procedures alone under the guidance of the doctor. All of this has provided him with valuable experience.
Li Lang, Xi’an’s mentor and vice president of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, said that Xi An was a diligent student, and I think this is the first element of his success. He’s gone through the most difficult language hurdle and now he’s entering an accelerated phase where you can see how fast he’s progressing in surgery.
Xi An’s efforts were also seen by the doctors in the operating room, and they never hesitated to give the greatest help to a foreign student. This is also the consistent attitude of Guangxi Medical University in foreign exchanges.
As the vice chairman of the National “Belt and Road” Cardiac Interventional Training Expert Committee, and has won the “Belt and Road” Cardiac Interventional Training Outstanding Contribution Award, Li Lang said that there are many graduate students like Xi An, and we have accepted and trained doctors from Indonesia, Bangladesh and Malaysia and other countries to learn coronary heart disease interventional diagnosis and treatment techniques for three consecutive years.
Li Lang said that this is our country’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, as our dream and mission, that is, to radiate our country’s medical technology to more countries, we accept these ASEAN countries students, advanced students, and return to China after their studies, to better serve their own people.
In the past 8 years in China, Xi An has been immersed in the life of Nanning and the palace of medicine, he is the epitome of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University to implement the “Belt and Road” initiative, strengthen the training of medical talents in ASEAN and countries along the “Belt and Road”, and is also a witness to the continuous development of the city and the reception of visitors from all over the world.
